GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) Course Details !

GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) course eligibility, scope, jobs and salary:-
GME stands for Graduate Marine Engineering course. It is a 1 year long presea training course that focuses on Technical knowledge related to the field of Marine Engineering. In this article, we will have a detailed analysis of GME course. We will check out basic course details, scope, job opportunities available after completing the course, salary details, eligibility criteria etc.
It is a 1 year long pre sea training course. It focuses on Technical aspects related to Marine Engineering, such as-
  • Marine Electrical and Electronics Systems
  • Marine Machinery
  • Marine Engineering Drawing
  • Marine Safety Engineering
  • Naval Architecture
  • Communication Skills
  • Hydraulics
After successfully completing this Diploma course and clearing MEO Class-4 Part A Examination, students will have to go through 6 months of compulsory sea service. After this stint and clearing safety courses, other training modules and tests, clearing MEO Class-4 Part B Examination, a cadet will be provided with Marine Engineering Officer Class 4 Certificate of CompetencyAfter obtaining this certificate, one may start working as a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World! 12 months of sea service later, one may again appear for training modules and appear for MEO Class 2- Part B Examination. The point is that while in service, one may choose to appear for further training modules, courses and appear for exams. These exams will help one attain advanced competency certificates, like- Marine Engineering Class 2 Certificate of Competency and Marine Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency. In short, one may rise through the ranks and eventually become Chief Engineering Officer, gradually. 

GME COURSE’S ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-
There are two main requirements- Educational and Medical.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:-
B.E./B.Tech. Degree holders in Mechanical or Naval Architecture branches are eligible to pursue this course. Minimum marks criteria may exist, in case of some Institutes. And it varies from one Institute to another! Generally, it is between 50-60% marks in the final year of B.E./B.Tech. Program.
MEDICAL/PHYSICAL STANDARDS:-
Candidate should be physically fit and capable of taking up seafaring role. Eyesight is also checked before admission. At least unaided vision of 6/12 is required in each eye. Candidate should not be suffering from color or night blindness. Also, a candidate should not be more than 28 years of age at the time when the course starts.
SCOPE, JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND SALARY DETAILS:-
One may take up the role of Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships after obtaining the Class 4 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer). Once there, one may rise through the ranks and land better positions, by appearing for training modules and courses and clearing examinations associated with them. Starting salary depends on different factors such as- profile of Employer, quality of the Institute from which the course has been pursued, grades attained by cadet etc. Generally, it is between 40-60k Rupees each month. After retiring, one may take up the role of an Instructor at Maritime Institutes. Becoming an Independent Consultant is another option that is available.
